these poems with kerosene
“The duende is a power, not a work. It is a struggle, not a thought. I have heard an old maestro of
the guitar say, ‘the duende is not in the throat; the duende climbs up inside you, from the soles of the feet.’”
(Gabriel Garcia Lorca).
Red Sammy’s, latest album, these poems with kerosene, blends the simplicity of song with poetic
sensibilities. We encounter various characters who all share a similar miserable and heartbreaking
circumstance in life. They frequent the same places: package good stores, dirty bars, street
corners. Some characters voice their anger and frustration while others are indifferent to their bleak situation.
The dialogue and story, however, is left to the listener for interpretation.
Red Sammy collaborates with poet and University of Baltimore professor, Steve Matanle.
